Microbiology

Name of the Department- MICROBIOLOGY

1. About the Department:

The Department of Microbiology was established in the year 2022 and assumed a multifaceted role, serving as the vanguard of scholarly pursuit and experiential learning. Here, it furnishes students with indispensable theoretical insights and hands-on training in the intricate domain of microorganisms, their pathogenic mechanisms and diagnostic methodologies.

In the hospital setting, the Microbiology Department is instrumental in disease diagnosis and management, conducting tests to identify pathogens, determine antibiotic susceptibilities and monitor infectious disease trends. This aids in the timely and accurate treatment of patients. Infection control practices are also reinforced through the surveillance efforts of microbiologists and hospital infection control team who implement preventive measures by identifying outbreaks to curtail transmission.

The arms of this multidisciplinary domain consist of Bacteriology, Virology, Mycology, Serology, Immunology, Parasitology, Mycobacteriology & Hospital Infection Control laboratory. The laboratory is well equipped with advanced molecular aids like RTPCR, CBNAAT & BACTEC which facilitates prompt & timely testing for deadly infections like SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis along with blood borne infections supplementing the conventional microbiological tools for better delivery of diagnostic services.

The Department of Microbiology has been at the forefront in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, be it the diagnostic support including RT-PCR and CBNAAT as well as infection control activities. The Department of Microbiology has been NABL (Medical entry level) accredited from March 8, 2024 as per ISO: 128.  For keeping the regular quality checks the department has collaboration with Christian Medical College, Vellore & actively participating in External Quality Assessment Scheme for Bacteriology & Serology under the aegis of Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists since 2023.

Overall, the Microbiology Department serves as a cornerstone of medical education, healthcare delivery and public health efforts, embodying a crucial nexus between academia, clinical practice, and societal welfare.
