Pacu
PACU
Department of Anaesthesia has 10 beded post anaesthetic care unit.
Purpose : To ensure patient safety in the immediate postoperative period.
Scope: Transfer of patient from OT to PACU, efficient monitoring and pain management in the PACU, followed by safe transfer to the postoperative/recovery ward or general ward.
PACU have fowler beds with high-end multipara monitors, Each patient is observed by a PACU nursing staff or Anaesthesiologist. An appropriate standard of monitoring and clinical observation is maintained until the patient is fully recovered from anaesthesia, Clinical observation is supplemented with minimal standards of monitoring i.e. pulse oximetry, non- invasive blood pressure monitoring, ECG etc.
Minimum information which are recorded for patients in the post-anesthesia care unit include
1. Level of consciousness
2. Patency of the airway
3. Respiratory rate and adequacy
4. Oxygen saturation
5. Oxygen administration
6. Non-invasive blood pressure
7. Heart rate and rhythm
8. Pain intensity on a validated scale e.g. VAS
9. Nausea and vomiting
10. Intravenous drugs/ fluids
11. Core temperature
12. Standards for transferring the patients from the PACU are ultimately established by the department of Anesthesiology.
13. For all major surgeries, the patients should preferably be shifted to the postoperative/recovery ward for at least 24 hours and then to the general ward.
